INCREDIBLE video of the last F-5 tornado – May 3, 1999
**WARNING!! DO NOT TAKE COVER UNDERNEATH AN OVERPASS WHEN A TORNADO IS APPROACHING!!!*** This video defines the beginning of storm chasing for TornadoVideos.net. We knew very little about storm structure or forecasting back then, but we learned fast on May 3, 1999. This video is a great example of how NOT to safely storm chase. Seeking shelter under an overpass is a HUGE mistake, since the winds actually accelerate there when a tornado approaches. Although this has been debated by weather experts one storm chaser claimed to have gotten at one point in time a wind reading of 318 mph in this storm. As I said though weather experts have deemed this as unlikely.
That being said there have been many scientists that have clamored for the addition of an F6 parameter to the Fujita scale, because they say it is possible that winds could reach over 300 mph in a given torando.
Bottom line, this storm was from hell, no matter the wind speed.

@ This “outrun a tornado discussion” People normally don’t outrun a tornado in their car because they’re normally *outside* of their car when they realize it’s too late, and by the time they get back to their car the tornado’s three seconds behind them. Also, about 90% of these videos are popular because the people take cover and get hit by the tornado, no one wants to see someone drive away from the tornado, or at least, would think it’s a great video.

I agree. Just an estimate… 5% of tornadoes travel faster than 60 mph? Yes they can grow but if you’re at least 100 yards away you hit the gas, and don’t run out of it.
