Is it legal to take video clips from copyrighted sources and post them on a website?
For example, and1 basketball has copyrighted streetball mixtapes. Clips from these videos are all over youtube. Is it legal to a) post em on youtube and b) to host them on your own website?
I think all this sharing is great, but legally it seems questionable & probably hurts the pocketbooks of the people who get their copyrighted material taken.
In general, copyrighted material may not be uploaded to YouTube in this way. In particular, sports copyright holders tend to be very assertive in enforcing their copyright.
It is possible that a short clip may come under "Fair Use" provisions, but it is unlikely.
What is worse is if the clips are used for profit. A lot of sites have found that for their cost.
No, it’s illegal – and the owners of copyright material can, and do, get their material taken down by YouTube etc all the time.
